In the first century C.E., a young woman – searching for a new life beyond the strictures and hierarchies of her home village – leaves to join a radical new social movement. Joining the followers of Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix), her spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will led to Jerusalem, and the painful reality of her teacher’s destiny. Lion director Garth Davis returns with a nuanced perspective on the Mary Magdalene story, featuring a skilfully-drawn lead performance from Rooney Mara and cinematography from Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher).
Cast: Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tahar Rahim, Denis Ménochet.
