As Future Astronaut No. 245 with Virgin Galactic, Nigel Henbest has been closely involved with Richard Branson’s plans for commercial flights into space.
For the Hebridean Dark Skies Festival, Nigel will tell the story of his journey from astronomer to science communicator to astronaut-in-waiting, and contrasts this with the – surprisingly different – background and motivation of his fellow passengers. He relates his experience of signing up with Virgin Galactic, the various events he has attended as a Future Astronaut and the training involved, in particular a memorable trip on the “Vomit Comet”.
Dr Nigel Henbest is one of the UK’s leading astronomy and space popularisers. His 38 books and over 1000 articles have been translated into 27 languages; while his 60+ television programmes have been screened worldwide.
During the Hebridean Dark Skies Festival Nigel will also co-present two festival events with Dr Heather Couper – Cosmic Quest at An Lanntair and an additional event on Friday 15 February at Calanais Visitor Centre.
This event is included in our Saturday 16 February day ticket – five events for £25 (£20 concs).
