Theatre in Schools Scotland tours vibrant live theatre production Ginger, by Tortoise in a Nutshell, to primary schools in the Isle of Lewis and North Uist in November 2024.

Theatre in Schools Scotland, National Theatre of Scotland and Imaginate’s successful schools touring project, is bringing performances of Ginger by multi-award winning company Tortoise in a Nutshell to a number of schools in the Western Isles. The acclaimed production will visit Stornoway Primary on 11 November, Laxdale Primary on 12 November, Sgoil an Rubha on 13 November and Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath joined by Sgoil Bhaile a’ Mhanaich on 15 November.

The performances in Lewis are supported by An Lanntair and in North Uist by Manipulate Arts.

Ginger is a fun, creative and vibrant show for younger audiences in P1 – P4. It tells the tale of a misshapen gingerbread person, discarded and marked for the bin. The show’s biscuity hero inspires a picture-perfect kitchen to come alive. A disco fridge, somersaulting teaspoons and a mysterious yodelling sink are all brought to life using a mix of puppetry, performance and play.

The performances of Ginger are followed by a gingerbread decorating session for pupils.

Tortoise in a Nutshell is a multi-award winning company based in Edinburgh creating world class award-winning visual theatre. Its unique blend of puppetry, performance and innovation produces exciting and thought provoking experiences for audiences of all ages. Ginger was created by Tortoise in a Nutshell in association with Platform and Lyth Arts Centre. Directed by Alex Bird and Arran Howie, the show is performed by Kerry Cleland with puppeteer Ella Mackay and set design by Katy Rae Wilson.

Theatre in Schools Scotland has been bringing exciting live theatre and dance performances to schools in the Western Isles since 2016 and is delighted to be returning in 2024 with Ginger.
