Community Land Outer Hebrides and the University of St Andrews present an evening with Rueben George (Tsleil-Waututh First Nation) Rueben is a prominent Indigenous land defender and Sun Dance Chief who spent much of the last decade fighting the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which transports crude bitumen through his nation’s territory (where Vancouver, BC, Canada is today).
He is author of the national best-selling book It Stops Here: Standing up for Our Lands, Our Waters, and Our People (co-authored with Michael Simpson, Lecturer in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews).
Join us and local Community Land representatives for an afternoon discussion with Rueben on the themes of the sacred connection of the Tsleil-Waututh people to their lands and waters, and how they are drawing on their culture to heal and stand up to the ongoing colonization of their people by the state and extractive industries.
This event will be hosted by Finlay MacLennan (Community Land Outer Hebrides) and Mike Simpson (University of St Andrews) and moderated by Agnus Rennie (Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn).
