Winter weather lasts a long time in the Western Isles and artists confined to the indoors will often resort to views from their window or objects on or near a windowsill for subject matter. This course will encourage reflection on how the subject of ‘The Window’ has featured in the work of artists over the ages – Vermeer’s studies of women cooking or reading by the light of the window, hotel room window images looking onto New York skylines by Hopper or Matisse’s window views onto the sparkling seaside promenades of the south of France.

Participants will be encouraged to research this theme and make studies in line and colour from life in preparation for producing an original acrylic painting.
