‘Artists in the wild’ is a Culture Collective project that will introduce participants to island based artists. The project involves visiting different artists across Lewis and Harris learning about their work and motivations. The artists will then take participants out into the landscape where they will engage in a creative visual arts activity. Activities will vary with each artist.
I trained as a sculptor at Glasgow School of Art, motivated by drawing people’s attention to the environment.
My work enables me to explore themes that interest me. Living in Lewis the landscape speaks to me of survival, in what can be a harsh social, environmental, religious and economic context.
I am currently exploring the history of the building of the destitution walls of Uig, who made them and why and what parallels exist in contemporary life.
Alongside that I have an ongoing interest in people and portraiture.
It will be lovely to welcome you to;
Shoreside,
Giosla
HS2 9EW
at 10.30am on the 10th of August.
It is only 25 miles from Stornoway.
Head for Uig on the B8011. Giosla is exactly 10 miles from the Garrynahine turning. Take the second right where there is a sign for Gisla hydro power station. There is plenty parking at my gate.

We can walk up to the dam, a great brutalist concrete shape, or if you prefer just sit in the garden, on the Rubha or if the weather is bad there should be room in the house or studio. Bring a picnic lunch and there will be tea or coffee.
Bring whatever materials you like but I would recommend a range of pencils and charcoal to capture the brooding dam and the deep glen that leads up to it. (Its a 5 minute walk on a road).
Be sure to bring waterproofs and suitable walking boots.
