Mary Morrison is based in Kyles Scalpay, Harris, and her work is infused with the space, light and elemental qualities of the Atlantic archipelago.  It suggests liminal spaces, edges and shifting tidal lines. She evokes a sense of place and natural forms through an alchemical use of oil-based materials. These combine with graphic elements and annotation relating to mapping, measuring and music, creating an additional visual language and tension within the paintings.

I am continually inspired by relationships between the written word and image, including the poetry of Iain Crichton Smith, Seumas Heaney, and the Sufi poet, Rumi. My work is also informed by Geopoetics, a theory and practice developed by Scottish poet Kenneth White, which is about expressing the earth through creative processes”.

Mary is a Professional Member of the SSA (Society of Scottish Artists), has exhibited across the UK and in the US, and is represented &Gallery, Edinburgh.

After an introduction to Mary’s work, inspirations and processes, there will be an opportunity to work outdoors.

Participants should bring a packed lunch and a drink, as well as their own sketching or writing materials or camera. We will walk to Niseaboist Beach from the Centre, which will involve a short downhill walk across firm ground down to the beach. Participants should have sturdy footwear, layers and a waterproof – basically plan for changeable weather conditions!  If the weather is particularly bad, there will be an opportunity to work under shelter.

Talla na Mara is owned and managed by the West Harris Trust on behalf of the local community.  There is a restaurant at Talla na Mara which opens at 10am so you can purchase hot drinks on arrival.  There are facilities, an exhibition space, gift shops and studios at the centre should you wish to stay on after the session and look around.

The West Harris Trust have a Beach Wheelchair, so if anyone would like to book it to access the beach the WHT would need a couple of days notice.  Full details here: Beach Wheelchair Hire Note – it is recommended for use on Horgabost Beach due to easier road access and flat beach.
