‘Artists in the wild’ is a Culture Collective project that will introduce participants to island based artists. The project involves visiting different artists across Lewis and Harris learning about their work and motivations. The artists will then take participants out into the landscape where they will engage in a creative visual arts activity. Activities will vary with each artist.
Laura Maynard says of her work;
My work has always in some way been inspired by the waves, vast horizons and or the connections that people (in particular surfers) have with this very special and wild place. I studied drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee and fell in love with screen printing in the final years of my degree. Over the last 6 years I have created screen printing facilities in my studio. Allowing me to connect my love of painting with screen printing- experimenting with layers and enjoying the often unexpected accidents that come with this process. Lately, graffiti art has become an influence in my work, giving new possibilities in terms layers, colours and texture. I split my working week between being an art and design teacher at the Nicolson Institute, creating my own work and being where I love most- by the sea and near the waves.

You will pass a church and an old shop on your left. It is a small white cottage with a buoy hanging on the gate.
Participants should bring a small backpack with a packed lunch and a drink, as well as their own sketching materials. The walk we’ll be taking is from Laura’s house to the beach. It is not rough terrain but walking boots would be advised along with waterproofs.
