An Lanntair’s Artist Gatherings are monthly social events for island artists of all disciplines, from music, film and theatre to visual art and design. You do not need to be established or professional to come along – everyone is welcome and we are here to support all forms of creativity.
Each month we invite different artists to talk about their work, and our June gathering is a double bill showcasing a unique, year-long collaboration between Lewis-based artists Jill Smith and Mhairi Law.
Jill Smith is a pioneering performance artist whose work dates back to the 1960s. In 1975 she was the first female artist to have her work shown at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh. Now, as part of the Fruitmarket’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Jill has been commissioned to create monthly rituals at locations across the Isle of Lewis, and on St Kilda, each one inspired by a different sign of the zodiac.
Some of these rituals have been public events, others private ones, but all have been documented by photographer Mhairi Law, who has been working with Jill throughout the project.
For this month’s Artist Gathering, Jill and Mhairi will share some of the many striking images from the project as well as discussing their own individual work.
This event is part of An Lanntair’s Artist Support Programme, supported by the Foyle Foundation.
If you’d like to share your work at a future Artist Gathering, contact Andrew Eaton-Lewis at andrew@anlanntair.com. All contributors will be paid a fee.
