A new exhibition of striking ceramic figures celebrating the Herring Girls who serviced the fishing industry on which Stornoway was built. The women undertook the arduous work of gutting, salting and packing herring into barrels for sale and export – notably to the Baltic – and also followed the seasonal work to other seaports such as Lerwick, Lowestoft and Yarmouth.
The exhibition will also feature photographs of the thriving harbour and quayside throughout the last century as part of the programme to mark the 150th year of the Stornoway Port Authority.
