Aig Muir: At Sea Exhibition visits and workshops for schools

In July 2019, artists Rachael Louise Bailey (Kent), Alasdair Asmussen Doyle (Belfast / Brussels), Beatrice Alvestad Lopez (Oslo/Stockholm), Bethany Rigby (London) and Dan Shay (Glasgow) undertook a sailing expedition from Berneray to St Kilda. Nearly five years later, the artists return with works that stem directly from their shared experience at sea. All of the works exhibited use materials gathered during the expedition including wool, photographs, film and water.

Workshops for Primary schools
Workshops based on the current ‘Aig Muir / At Sea’ Art exhibition at An Lanntair are available for Primary school classes on Wed 17th and Thurs 18th January.  Artist Dan Shay will speak to pupils about the artworks made by the 5 artists after their sailing residency to St Kilda. The show includes photography, prints, sculpture from found materials and experimental film and considers subjects including creating from an experience / journey, using found materials, layering images and collage, being inspired by history of a place, traditions and resourcefulness, and thinking about connection and communication and change.

The workshop with Primary school classes will include a presentation of the artwork and a practical exercise focusing on collage.  This is an exercise in creativity for learners to not feel precious about an image, to be open to chance and surprise, and to explore looking at the world differently.  This may include some group work using projectors to layer images.

You may decide to use the images pupils make as inspiration for a creative writing exercise about an imagined journey.

Dan will deliver these workshops in English.  Some sessions are available in Gaelic delivered by an Artist Educator. Contact us to arrange a date.

Suitable for: P4 – P7 classes
When: Wed 17 + Thurs 18 Jan at times to suit your timetable
