UHI BA Applied Music Recital: April Sutherland – People, Places & Pieces

Tues 28 Apr

My honours project is titled “People, Places & Pieces” and as it says on the tin is all about the people, places and pieces of music that have inspired me to become the musician I am today. Through the project and doing more teaching now myself, I find I am reflecting on the practice of the teachers I have been lucky enough to have over the years and why they were so inspiring to me.

The recital aims to take you into my world on a journey through different points in my life where I have been particularly inspired or influenced in a certain direction. Focusing on me going from a Traditional Highland Piper to a Trad Musician who enjoys playing many instruments and how my practice has changed as a result of this. I’ll be playing music written by some of my favourite people, for my favourite places or that happen to be stand out important pieces of music to me too.

As well as this I will be playing music that I’ve written myself. I’m always inspired to write by something, I don’t tend to write with no aim or purpose and therefore I’ll be showing you how these pieces are adding to my own carrying stream and to the tradition I love so much.
