An Lanntair and Scottish Society of Artists (SSA)
In this collaboration between the SSA and An Lanntair, artists from across Scotland, and beyond, reflect on the migration of people, animals, objects, systems and ideas. Movement is intrinsic to Scottish history, our planet and our species. Prominent in current humanitarian and political crises, from international conflict to immigration and asylum-seeking, from colonialism to population-shifts in response to a climate change. Conversely, migration has been essential in the development of complex global cultures and knowledge exchanges. Movement is the only constant in an ever-changing planet; woven into ecosystems, shaping the world we live in, the flora and fauna we share it with, the food we eat, the land we stand on and the oceans that regulate our climate.
It is important that this exhibition is located in a place where movement, and migration, is fundamental to the culture and landscape, from contemporary depopulation to historical emigration and clearance; from the migration of herring shoals to the constant movement of water and weather that has shaped the landscape and culture of the Outer Hebrides.
Alongside a display of thirty-six diverse artworks, we are also pleased to feature the invited work of contemporary printmaker Ade Adesina, whose complex relief prints depict dreamlike spaces filled with symbols, objects, artifacts and entities that create a fluid reflection on identity as something fundamentally anchored in the contexts that surround us.
