Charly Hamlyn Ceramics
As a ceramicist, Charly is inspired by the colours and forms she sees around her in the hills and coastline of our beautiful islands and by the wish to produce sustainable items that can be used and cherished for years.
She creates wheel-thrown stoneware for decorative and functional use – vases, bowls, mugs, jugs, small goblets and cups and also smaller, hand-built pieces including pendants. earrings, dishes and buttons.
Each piece is individually made and decorated in a variety of ways – turned, carved, impressed with leaves, flowers or Celtic stamps before having its first firing in the kiln. It is then further decorated with oxides and glazes, before having a second firing at a higher temperature. This finalises the journey of the clay from malleable earth to fixed form.
Charly is always happy to have visitors at her studio, 19 Crossbost, you are welcome to pop in for a chat or to buy something. Please message before making a special visit.

Philly Hare
Philly Hare creates her unique feltings in an old baker’s house in Ness, a crofting community at the northernmost point of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. She loves running and walking in all weathers through this wild and magical landscape. In her art she tries to capture the essence of the seas and skies which are at the heart of her daily life.
Philly uses the traditional needle-felting technique to combine threads of fine merino wool and mulberry silk into dramatic land-, sea- and sky-scapes. Philly selects wool of colours and textures which reflect the natural wildness of this remote island. The silk picks up the gleam of sunlight or moonlight on water or clouds.
Philly also uses the wet-felting technique to make hats, scarves and other items
Philly produces cyanotypes too. Cyanotype is a very old photographic printing process that produces prints (photograms) in distinctive blues. The word cyan comes from the Greek, meaning “dark blue substance.” The process was invented by Sir John Herschel, a brilliant astronomer and scientist, in 1842.
Philly creates her images by placing natural objects – such as leaves or feathers - directly on photosensitive paper, and exposing them for a period of time under the sun (or, in Lewis, more often a UV lamp). The chemicals are then washed out and the blue can be adjusted by adding toners into the process. Other techniques involve bubbles, clingfilm and turmeric!mEach cyanotype is a unique product that cannot be replicated.
You can find Philly’s work at local outlets including An Lanntair, and at her Etsy shop. Or email her at phillyhare@gmail.com

Tiger Textiles
Alison’s artwork is inspired by her native Hebridean heritage, Gaelic culture and natural surroundings.
Using drawing and painting as her basis, she then works on embroidering lengths of fabric, often Harris Tweed, with designs that complement the cloth. Through delicately stitching Gaelic songs and poems in the tweed, she tells the story of where the cloth is from and promoting culture in a modern way.
