In 2023 and 2024, Jill Smith carried out twelve actions across Lewis, Harris, and St. Kilda, following the zodiac calendar. In previous work dating back to the 70’s as a pioneering performance artist with her then husband Bruce Lacey, she used the astrological year, but this was the first time she had done so on her home islands. It was photographed by Mhairi Law and the exhibition combines these images with Jill’s diaries, specially-dyed textiles, and selected objects that were part of this ‘ritual journey’. The work was commissioned as part of its fiftieth birthday celebrations by Fruitmarket in Edinburgh, where in 1975 Jill was the first woman to exhibit.
