Solas: The Island Photography of Margaret Fay Shaw

Thurs 31 Oct

This special Faclan: the Hebridean Book Festival event celebrates the life, photography and film of the American anthropologist Margaret Fay Shaw and her time in Uist in the early 1930s.

The evening will include a screening of Solas, a new short film about Shaw’s life created by the National Trust for Scotland’s Canna House archivist, Fiona J Mackenzie, who will also present the event.

Solas (Gaelic for light) uses rediscovered film shot by the US-born folklorist who dedicated her life to documenting Gaelic song. The film uses her images, films and words to tell the story of her life and the people in it, and particularly two BBC broadcasts from the 1950s in which Margaret and her close friend and companion Magda Sagarzazu explain how their lives were affected by the islands, the people, the animals, the birds, the songs and the sounds.
