A product of our mentoring scheme, Calum’s paintings are vivid, visual metaphors for the opposition, tensions and rip-tides in the traditional communities of Lewis, and the religious, linguistic and working culture that profoundly influenced him. An environment where communal activity and identity were dominant, yet where the individual too was significant. He describes being ‘simultaneously mired and elevated by spirituality, repressed and reinforced by community, muted and enhanced by language.’ He depicts ‘the contradictory impulses against which Islanders must reconcile themselves.’
