Through private personal research Colin Mackenzie amassed a large collection of Asian antiquities – famously known today as The Mackenzie Collection. The Collection is housed in museums and libraries in both India and the UK.

Mackenzie’s documentation is one of the most extensive historical researches ever carried out on Ancient Indian art and culture. It was his wish to present these collections properly so that they could be shared widely.

The Collector Extraordinaire exhibition fulfilled this by bringing together for the first time the material telling the story of the Mackenzie’s career in India, the maps he produced, the material he collected and the important world heritage sites he documented and excavated.

The exhibition included a range of wonderful material generously on loan from the British Museum, British Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and was held at Museum nan Eilean August – November 2017
