Naive, lovelorn writer/composer Christian (Ewan McGregor) is taken up by bohemians like Toulouse-Lautrec to put on a show at the scandalous Moulin Rouge, where courtesan/singer Satine (Nicole Kidman) will do anything to further her acting career, especially if pressed by the club proprietor (Jim Broadbent). Until, that is, she meets Christian… A Red Shoes-style fable of love and art in conflict with commerce and power, directed by Baz Luhrmann and jam-packed with allusions, gags and songs, performed with enormous gusto.
