Edinburgh based Palestinian artist and activist, Nada Shawa, will be sharing poems recorded especially for this medical aid Fundraiser!
Nada Shawa – Biography
Nada came to Scotland from Gaza at the age of 8 years of age, without her family, to attend school and receive treatment for her Cerebral Palsy. Due to the dangerous situation in Palestine, Nada was unable to return to Gaza, and made Scotland her home. She went on to graduate from the University of Edinburgh with an honours degree.
Nada then worked extensively in the field of refugee support, and human rights, including disability rights across Scotland. Nada’s creative side and humanitarian side came together when she choreographed and performed a wheelchair dance at a fund raising event for Edinburgh Direct Aid, and helped bring Palestinian athletes from Gaza to compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Over the following years, Nada had written and performed material at storytelling events, hosted by the Edinburgh World Justice Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival of Middle Eastern Spirituality and Peace.
In her leisure time, Nada also enjoys singing. She has taken part in community singing and also performed at the Usher Hall.
In 2022, Nada was selected to dance as part of the cast of the ‘A Wee Journey, which premiered that year during the Edinburgh International Festival. She then joined the production on tour around Scotland in March 2023.
