Light pollution has had a huge and often negative impact not only on the way we now live, but on the ecosystems around us.

The City Dark is one of the most thought-provoking and visually striking films to be made on the subject. Film-maker Ian Cheney grew up in rural Maine and spent his childhood gazing at the stars; in his beautifully shot 2011 film he sets out to answer the question: “What do we lose when we lose the night?”

“A love story that reminds us of our ancestral past.” Roger Ebert.

The City Dark is screening as part of Dark Skies Discovery Day, a whole day of Hebridean Dark Skies Festival events in partnership with Lews Castle College UHI and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Day tickets are available for just £15/£13.

The Hebridean Dark Skies Festival is supported by Caledonian MacBrayne, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Culture and Business Fund Scotland. We would also like to thank our event partners, Calanais Visitor Centre, Stornoway Astronomical Society, Gallan Head Community Trust, and Lews Castle College UHI , as well as Cala Hotels, Outer Hebrides Tourism, and VisitScotland.
