This short programme of films is part of A Day of Creativity and Curiosity, a whole day of events bringing together the worlds of art and astronomy.

Cogito in Space is a project by artist Daniela de Paulis, in which human brain activity is sent into outer space as radio waves. The artist will introduce a short film about this fascinating project, created at the Dwingeloo radio telescope in the Netherlands, pictured above. Ahead of her visual moonbounce event later in the day, the artist will also introduce Le Voyage dans La Lune, an animation inspired by director George Méliès and created from 26 ‘moon reflected’ images of the Lunar phases.

Continuing the Moon theme, we will also show British Landing on the Moon, a short film from The Lacey Rituals. This rare screening will be introduced by Lewis-based artist Jill Smith, who made the film with Bruce Lacey. We are grateful to the family of director Walter Patrick Krell for their permission to share this fascinating fragment of 1960s counter-culture, an irreverent response to the Apollo Moon landing.

We will also screen Sounds of Space, a series of short animated films created by artist Diana Scarborough, with music by Australian composer Kim Cunio. The films – recently screened at the Venice Biennale – are part of a bigger project in which Diana has been working with research scientist Nigel Meredith to find novel ways of visualising space weather data. Sounds of Space has also been developed into a live show which we hope to bring to the Hebridean Dark Skies Festival in the future.

Want to spend the whole day with us? Entry to this event is included in the day ticket for A Day of Creativity and Curiosity, a whole day of events programmed by An Lanntair in partnership with Creativity and Curiosity lead artists Ione Parkin and Gillian McFarland. Buy a day ticket here.
