‘Artists in the wild’ is a Culture Collective project that will introduce participants to island based artists. The project involves visiting different artists across Lewis and Harris learning about their work and motivations. The artists will then take participants out into the landscape where they will engage in a creative visual arts activity. Activities will vary with each artist.
David Greenall made the news in late 2023 when his painting Crofts at South Dell won the prestigious Highland Art Prize at the Royal National Mod in Paisley.
Born on Merseyside in 1947, he left school at the age of fifteen and worked in the fishing and building industries before taking up painting in his late twenties, attending Norwich School of Art in 1992 as a mature student, followed by fine art printmaking at Winchester, for his BA Honours Degree.
His paintings of light and landscape – composed of raw pigments, blended with wax, resin, oil or egg tempera – are luminous, subtle, and nuanced yet rendered with power, vigour, and unerring draughtsmanship.
Participants should bring a small backpack with a packed lunch and a drink, as well as their own sketching materials. Walking boots would be advised along with waterproofs.
