Set in a WWII London populated by the women, old men and children who remained at home. Young Welsh woman Catrin (Gemma Arterton) lands a job writing dialogue for propaganda filmmakers looking for “a woman’s touch”. Crossing paths (and swords) with dashing producer Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric old thesp Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy, on top form) as bombs drop all around them, Catrin discovers there’s just as much drama, comedy and passion behind the camera as there is on-screen.
