5pm:  Beyond the Northlands: Viking Voyages and the Old Norse Sagas 

On saga manuscripts, trolls and dragons jostle with explorers, traders, and kings.  To explore and explain them Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough travelled thousands of miles on a journey to the far-flung corners of the Viking world.

Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough is Assistant Professor in Medieval History and Literature at Durham University.  She is one of ten BBC Radio 3 New Generation Thinkers.

 

7pm:  Winter is Coming

 Episode 1, Game of Thrones (HBO 2011)

A faithful adaptation of the first chapters of George R R Martin’s medieval fantasy, this introduces the setting and main characters.  The title is the motto of House Stark. The episode remains a top-polling favourite among fans of the global phenomenum.
