Doug Scott, broken legs, Ogre, 1972

On 24 September 1975, Doug Scott and Dougal Haston became the first Britons to reach the summit of Everest.  Scott went on to become one of Britain’s greatest ever mountaineers, pioneering new climbs in the remotest corners of the globe. He tells his story from his birth in Nottingham during the darkest days of war to the summit of the world.

Doug Scott, Guy, Lee, Dennis Hennek, Strone Ulladale, 1969

Closer to home, in 1969 (and later twice in 1971), Doug became the first to scale the largest overhang in Europe, Strone Ulladale in Harris.  Graded A5, without bolts it is one of the toughest technical climbs on the planet.  Although only 1,500 feet it took them 3 days to conquer it.
